Mental health and wellbeing can be complex. We might use it to refer to what we’re thinking and feeling, how well we’re coping with daily life or what feels possible at the moment. Our mental health and wellbeing can impact our lives in many ways, and when we’re feeling unwell it can impact the way we behave.

If you are feeling in crisis and think you may be at risk of hurting yourself or feeling suicidal, you should contact the appropriate emergency services.

Good mental health and good wellbeing are not necessarily connected. You could have a mental health problem, but be experiencing good wellbeing right now, or you may not have a mental health problem but be struggling with your wellbeing at the moment.

There are a range of different mental health problems that affect the way we think and how we’re feeling mentally, emotionally and physically. Anyone can have problems with their mental health, and each condition can affect people differently. Some people experience more severe effects than others, but this does not mean what they’re experiencing is any less important.

Some common mental health conditions include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
